2016 TOfilmfest: Canadian film highlights

Last week, the Toronto International Film Festival held it's Canadian film press conference for 2016. Canadian feature films will appear in almost all of the film programs: Galas, Special Presentations, Masters, Contemporary, Vanguard, Primetime (international television series), Documentaries, and Cinematheque (retrospectives).
Here are some highlights:

Gala Presentations

• Two Lovers and a Bear, Kim Nguyen

Masters

• Anatomy of Violence, Deepa Mehta

This week, we'll be working on updating the Midnight Madness and Vanguard programs, as well as more Documentaries, and Cinematheque films.

2013 Canadian film entries

The Canadian films screening at the Toronto International Film Festival were announced August 7th; they include entries in a number of festival programs:  Special Presentations, Contemporary World Cinema, Masters, Discovery, Vanguard, Short Cuts Canada.

This announcement also confirmed the inclusion of Gia Milani's All the Wrong Reasons, starring Cory Monteith — previously reported by the The Hollywood Reporter.

Also — for the first time ever — a short-film will be presented before the opening-night feature at the Elgin Theatre (The Fifth Estate).  The independently produced Canadian short "Wakening", will screen as part of a 'Stage to Screen' commemoration of the 100th year anniversary of the Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre.

On Tuesday August 13th, there will be new additions announced for Galas, Special Presentations, Contemporary World Cinema, TIFF Kids, and Wavelengths.

(It is anticipated that most, if not all, of the films announced by UniFrance on August 5, will also be confirmed.)

2013 Midnight Madness, Vanguard, Doc, City-to-City, and Cinematheque

Last week, the Toronto International Film Festival announced many additions to the TIFF'13 line-up...

• Midnight Madness
  (one MM title remaining; TBA)
• Vanguard
• TIFF Docs
• Cinematheque
• City to City: Athens/Greece
• Special Events: "THE BIG CHILL turns 30"

These announcements confirmed the inclusion of a few titles previously announced by other media sources...

• The Last of the Unjust, Claude Lanzmann
• The Unknown Known, Errol Morris
• Watermark, Jennifer Baichwal

TOfilmfest 2013

The first title for the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival has already been announced:

• Visitors, Godfrey Reggio

It will be presented by Steven Soderbergh, and the 4K digital-projection will be accompanied by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, performing the score by Philip Glass, led by conductor Michael Riesman.  (The screening will take place Sunday, September 8 at 6PM at the Elgin Theatre.)

The kick-off announcements for TIFF'13 are tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, July 23 — and many more films are to be announced in the weeks leading up to the film fest in September.  Of course, there is much speculation as to what's coming, but fwiw, here are some candidates we saw at the 2013 Maryland Film Festival ...

• Sundance premiere

• It Felt Like Love, Eliza Hittman
• Mother of George, Andrew Dosunmu
• A Teacher, Hannah Fidell

• IFF Boston premiere

• Willow Creek, Bobcat Goldthwait
  (would make a great Midnight Madness screening!)

...usually, our summer of film research begins with candidates from Cannes...

• Blue Is The Warmest Colour (Palme d'Or)
• Inside Llewyn Davis (Grand Prix)
• Heli (Best Director)
• A Touch of Sin (Best Screenplay)
• The Past (Best Actress, Bérénice Bejo )
• Nebraska (Best Actor, Bruce Dern)
• The Immigrant (Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix)
• All Is Lost (Robert Redford)

...and ends with premieres at Venice...

• Gravity (opening film)
• Moebius, Ki-duk Kim (unofficial)

...we'll be tracking all the major film-fests in between, too!

This year, the City to City program will spotlight 10 films from Athens, Greece — apparently more recent films will be a priority: "we may go back a little while [e.g. three or four years] but not that far... [and include] a range of styles and genres, from strong fiction tales to documentaries" (CBC).

Looking back 4 years, we expect the program to include

• Dogtooth, Giorgos Lanthimos (Oscar nominated for best foreign language film).

[Btw, past City to City programs have highlighted Tel Aviv/Israel (2009), Istanbul/Turkey (2010), Buenos Aires/Argentina (2011), and Mumbai/India (2012).]

As for Canadian features, Cinemablographer has highlighted some to anticipate:

• Devil’s Knot, Atom Egoyan
• Third Person, Paul Haggis
• Prisoners, Denis Villeneuve
• Dallas Buyers Club, Jean-Marc Vallée
• Tom à la ferme, Xavier Dolan
• Baby, How'd We Ever Get This Way, Bruce McDonald

One more film of note:  writer/director Isaac Cravit has just completed his first feature, titled “Solo”, and (since all his previous short-films have all made it into TIFF) there's a good chance it will screen this September — best of luck to Isaac and his crew!  :-)
